System Restore (XP) Function

System Restore function is used in Windows Me, XP and Vista. It allows you to restore system settings, such as registry entries, installed software, system files, to an earlier point in time. You may need this function if you keep getting errors or your system constantly crahses with the current configuration. Any better options than System Restore for Windows XP?

Keeping you registry clean and ordered or timely repairing it with reliable registry repair software will do a better job than System Restore. Many Windows errors will never appear at all. In addition, System Restore and Last Known Good configuration will affect all system settings, even those that you would like to retain. Reparing registry will only remove corrupt resistry records and correct errors, but your system settings will be preserved.

How Does System Restore (XP) Work?

System Restore is scheduled to backs up system files (.exe, .dll and other), registry and drivers. Backing up points can be created manually or automatically (Every 24 hours, at startup, when Windows updates or new software installed).

When required, these backups can be used to roll back to the old configuration. But remember that the roll back period is limited because the disk space allocated to System Restore is limited as well. When System restore runs out of disk space, older backups are removed and replaced with thelatest ones. If you have less than 200Mb of disk space, System Restore will be automatically disabled in Windows XP. Backups are created automatically or at user’s request. When Should I Use System Restore?

Using System Restore in XP

Close all programs before using System Restore. 1. Click Start => All Programs => Accessories => System Tools => System Restore. 2. In the Welcome to System Restore screen, select “Restore my computer to an earlier time”, and click Next. 3. Now you are displayed the “Select a Restore Point” screen with the calendar to choose restore points from. Available restore points are in bold. 

 Select the timepoint that predates the time the problem appeared. Pick out

the Restore date as close as possible to the time when errors began to occur. (Sometimes a rollback point may be created eralier on the same day!). Then click next.

System Restore XP

  1. Click on Next to confirm your choice on the Confirm Restore Point Selection screen.
  2. The system settings will be rolled back and your computer will restart. Click OK when you see the Restoration Complete screen. An additional Undo restore option will be created, allowing you to return to the settings you had before applying System Restore function.

If System Restore won’t start, try to enable it Safe Mode. However, in this case Undo restore option won’t be created!
