What is the Registry?
In the Microsoft Windows OS registry is a special database that stores configuration information (settings and options) for the operating system. The information stored in the registry concerns software, hardware, preferences and users settings. Any time when you change settings of the installed programs or Control Panel settings, they are written to the Registry. Most Windows programs write data to the Registry during installation. USER.DAT, SYSTEM.DAT and CLASSES.DAT are the files that contain all the registry entries (only USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT for Windows 95-98)
What Does the Registry Consist of?
The registry consists of keys and values. There are 6 root keys:
- HKEY CLASSES ROOT
- HKEY USERS
- HKEY CURRENT USER
- HKEY LOCAL MACHINE
- HKEY DYN DATA
- HKEY CURRENT CONFIG
Just like folders, Key have subkeys and their own values.
When necessary, you can edit, clean and repair the registry manually. For this, run regedit.exe or regedt32.exe in the Windows directory. However, unexperienced users may cause irreparable damage to the registry and disable their computer. That is why it is highly recommended to make a registry backup before editing it and use specialized software to fix the registry.
